Susan Spoon has spent the last 20 years running small businesses, but before purchasing Calhoun Flowers from its current owner in March of 2002, she had no professional experience as a florist.  Nonetheless, business has been good, if somewhat stressful at times.  In fact, Calhoun Flowers is already fully booked with events for two months of the coming year.  Ms. Spoon is well acquainted with running the business side of Calhoun Flowers, and she can be confident that a long time associate of the business, has the “flower side” under control.  Calhoun Flowers is a member of both the FTD and the Teleflora networks.  Although the required fees are steep, this aspect of the business provides a nice supplement to the shop’s wedding and event trade.  Ms. Spoon was able to acquire the business partly as a result of assistance from the LDC, in the form of an SBILP and an SBA Microloan.  She states that without the help of the LDC and the Small Business Development Center, she would not have been able to take over Calhoun Flowers.
